Marshalltown Community College Esports has run summer day camps every year since the program started, bringing in middle and high school students from around the state to practice with MCC coaching staff, students, and alumni to prepare for their upcoming seasons. These camps have grown in popularity each year, so much so that MCC is taking the next big step – MCC Esports is proudly partnering with the MCC Foundation to expand their reach and offer its first ever overnight camps!
From June 28th to July 2nd, MCC Esports will be holding overnight camps for high school students. Students will spend several days with MCC coaching staff working on macro-coaching, micro-coaching, and leadership fundamentals across seven of the Iowa High School Esports Association's featured titles. On the final day, campers will form two teams and compete against each other to see how much they've learned about coaching fundamentals. Throughout the camp, students will also participate in non-gaming activities, including team building, outdoor activities, leadership exercises, trivia, friendly (non-video game) competitions, and more.
IVCCD Esports Director, Dr. Andrew Goforth, wanted to find a way to provide a meaningful experience for students that builds upon the success of existing camps, but gives more time to explore leadership training and universal fundamentals that the traditional day camps don't have time to explore. Building on this, MCC Head Coach Nate Rodemeyer said, "We are really looking to build the next generation of high school leaders at these camps, giving them tools they can take back to their teams, and hopefully someday to our own MCC rosters!"
Spots for the camp are limited – MCC can accommodate a total of 20 campers playing PC titles like Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, Valorant, Rocket League, and Marvel Rivals, and an additional 16 campers playing console titles which include Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 DX. Finally, each game title requires a minimum of three campers to support. Any game titles that fail to meet this threshold will not be offered. Campers' families will be notified, and they'll have the opportunity to switch games or receive a refund for their camp registration if they no longer wish to attend.
Payment for the Summer Camp will be handled via the Marshalltown Community College Foundation. The MCC Foundation works directly with the college and the esports program, and 100% of the funds raised will be deposited into the MCC Esports fundraising account to provide additional scholarships and competition opportunities to future MCC esports student-athletes.
