MARSHALLTOWN – Marshalltown Community College softball captured its first victory since 2023 on Sunday, defeating Mount Mercy JV 13-4 in a five-inning standout performance. The win capped off a doubleheader that saw the Tigers showcase a powerful offensive explosion.
After dropping a tough opening game in which they surrendered an 11-run lead, the Tigers responded with a massive nine-run first inning in Game 2. MCC never looked back, silencing the host Mustangs to secure the split.
"We banged 20-plus hits and scored 24 runs on the day, but we simply could not throw enough strikes in Game 1 to secure the sweep," said first-year Head Coach Dave Hartman. "Morgan Williams was good through five, but our bullpen couldn't finish them off. We have to quit trying to miss bats and just make pitches."
In Game 2, Shalei Morn took control in the circle, going the distance for the Tigers. Morn allowed just one run through the first four innings before Mount Mercy managed three in the fifth. Any hope of a late-game comeback was extinguished by shortstop Meadow Shackelford, who made a stellar defensive play—scooping a ground ball up the middle, stepping on second, and firing to first for a game-ending double play.
"I was proud of our girls for the way they responded in Game 2," Hartman said. "Losing the big lead in Game 1 was a real gut punch, but they came out and attacked the second game on both sides of the ball."
The Tigers' offensive highlights included a grand slam from Madison Macias in the fourth inning of Game 1. Throughout the day, the team demonstrated improved plate discipline and consistent contact.
"We are making progress and getting better each day," noted Hartman. "That's our goal, and we can definitely build on today's games."
The Tigers (1-1) return to action this Friday as they head to Kansas for a six-game road trip, starting with a matchup against Fort Scott Community College.
