The Marshalltown Community College Tigers held the lead for the majority of the game on Wednesday night, but a late-game slide resulted in a heartbreaking 60-59 loss. Despite controlling the pace and maintaining an advantage for most of the game, the Tigers were unable to close the door in the final moments, eventually falling just one point short as the buzzer sounded.
The closing seconds proved to be the difference-maker as the Tigers struggled at the charity stripe. With multiple chances to seal the victory or force a larger lead, the team couldn't find their rhythm at the line. Jaeda Turner, who had been the focal point of the offense all night, went 1-for-4 from the free-throw line in the waning moments of the game.
Despite the difficult finish, Turner put on a spectacular individual performance, leading all scorers with a whopping 34 points. She was the primary catalyst for the MCC offense, accounting for over half of the team's total points. Kenijae Cherry provided the only other double-digit scoring effort for the Tigers, chipping in 13 points to keep the game competitive throughout.
Shennell Stewart led the team with 12 rebounds and Olivia Heartwell dished out 5 assists to help create scoring lanes.
The Tigers will now head into the holiday break to regroup after the narrow loss. They will return to their home court on Saturday, Jan. 3, to host Southwestern. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm as the Tigers look to start the new year with a victory.
